It starts somewhere around here, with this print from 2000. The job was to render the protective metal parts into a photography of a tree. At the time we didn't know about alpha channels, so we rendered it with a green backdrop and used magic wand tool in photoshop to cut it out.

Inspired by a scene from a David Attenborough documentary about cave dwelling insects.

Coming from a seafaring nation it came natural to also do some projects in the maritime sector. This is for a kite powered boat that aimed to set a new world record around the world.

Early experimentation on abstraction. Figuring out how to communicate ideas rather than design.

A big artistic breakthrough for Mir.

In the early 2000s, it could take days to render a single interior frame.

At a point in time we started investigating the spaces in front, in between and around as a stage for life.

At the time this image was a big deal. It even made it to the cover of 3d World Magazine.

We spent the entirety of the budget on flying to Copenhagen to take site photos. This led to a new rule: Mir was going to use photos whenever possible.

Perhaps the moment when we realized that this is the kind of project that we should be doing more of. An opportunity to showcase how architects in Norway celebrate our heritage with high quality projects.

It felt good to contribute to The Sami Science Building in Kautokeino

An experiment with style. A kind of collage that tries to evoke a feeling of the outdoor hiking culture in Norway.

The team in 2009 was Mats, Lars, Trond, Kristian, Vegard, Nick and Jan-Erik.

Could it be that this is the moment where Mir becomes Mir?

We are lucky to have been involved with many of the projects along the touristic routes in Norway. The government invests in high quality infrastructure projects such as toilets and viewpoints along heavily visited roads.

The concept of time starts to sneak into our images. It is just a glimpse as we pass by. The window shape and train tracks resonates with the building design.

Drones didn't exist in 2009 so we rented the biggest crane we could find in Oslo.

Around this time we started to think that maybe we shouldn't work on religious projects at all, to keep neutral in a way. A practice that we kept for years.

We have always been drawn towards something epic. Not so interested in the neutral.

We had a celebration in the office when we managed to convince White to go along with this foggy mood.

Brand/campaign images inspired by traditional Norwegian paintings. Cabins are a big part of Norwegian identity. Working with national identity has slowly become one of our main goals.

Hudson Yards was our first big scale major urban project.

A wonderful project that resonated a lot with us. The idea was to repurpose old and empty barns for hospitality purposes.

Still to this day one of the most classic Mir images.

This image marked a change in direction. At the time, the majority of our images was landscape format. Suddenly more and more images are starting to become portrait format.

Sanne, Piotr, Tamas, Vegard, Karim, Jan-Erik, Csaba, Agnete, Csaba, Nick, Trond, James and Torstein.

The most copied Mir image of all time We still receive job applications where this image appear in artists portfolio.

A view painted numerous times through history, we wanted to capture the passing of time in an image. The bridge being an almost invisble connection between now and then.

It only takes a short glance at this timeline to realize that Snøhetta has been important for Mir. Their projects have allowed us to experiment and invent.

For a couple years, we had a very fruitful collaboration with Swedish Architects Utopia. The company was led by Emma Jonsteg, who unfortunately passed away in 2022. Her spirit and engagement was very inspiring to Mir.

An early appearance of a visual style that would later be very mainstream.

The Illusat Icefjord Center competition marked the start of a long collaboration with Danish Architect Dorte Mandrup.

In 2016, putting a tree in the middle of the image like that felt almost subversive...

Two of our clients, Rindalshytter and Snøhetta found together in this beautiful project.

Here's a fun fact: We were invited to an architecture festival in Oslo when we were still in our 20s. Too embarrased to contact any of the architects, we spent the evening trying to sneak a business card into Winy Maas back pocket.

We are starting to realize that architects often make the safe choice even though they like our other sketches better. Mats is thinking: Perhaps we just make the image anyway?

At this point we were only making hyper realistic images. Finding this image helped us find back to the good old days where anything could happen.
